Characteristics And Uses Of Six Commonly Used Filter Membranes

1. Nylon membrane

Features: Good temperature resistance, can withstand 121 ℃ saturated steam autoclave for 30 minutes, maximum working temperature 60 ℃, good chemical stability, can withstand dilute acid, dilute alkalies, alcohols, esters, oils, hydrocarbons, Various organic and inorganic compounds such as halogenated hydrocarbons and organic oxides.

Uses Electronic, microelectronics, semiconductor industry water filtration, tissue culture medium filtration; liquid medicine filtration, beverage filtration, high-purity chemical filtration; filtration of aqueous solutions, and organic mobile phases.

2. Hydrophilic Polyvinylidene Difluoride Membrane (PVDF)

Features: Membrane has high mechanical strength, high tensile strength, good heat resistance, and chemical stability, low protein adsorption rate; strong negative electrostatic and hydrophobicity; hydrophobic and hydrophilic two forms. But not resistant to acetone, DMSO, THF, DMF, dichloromethane, chloroform, etc.

Uses: Hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride membrane is mainly used in gas and vapor filtration, and high-temperature liquid filtration; hydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride membrane is mainly used in tissue culture medium, additives, and other sterilization filtration solvents and purification filtration of chemical raw materials, Aseptic processing of reagents, filtration of high-temperature liquids, etc.

3. Mixed cellulose esters

Features: relatively uniform pore size, high porosity, no media shedding, thin texture, low resistance, fast filtration, minimal adsorption, low cost of use, but not resistant to organic solutions and strong acid and alkali solutions.

Uses: water injections that require autoclaving in the pharmaceutical industry, large infusions to filter out particles; sterilization of heat-sensitive drugs (biochemical preparations such as insulin ATP, coenzyme A, etc.) Analysis and determination of oil insoluble matter, and determination of water pollution index; used in scientific research departments such as somatic cell hybridization and mitochondrial complementation prediction of heterosis.

4. Polypropylene (PP)

Features: Without any adhesive, chemically stable, flexible, not easy to break, high-temperature resistance, can withstand high-pressure sterilization. Non-toxic, tasteless, acid, and alkali-resistant.

Uses: Suitable for making all kinds of coarse and fine filters, and pleated filter elements; suitable for plate and frame filter press filter membranes in beverage, pharmaceutical, and other industries; suitable for reverse osmosis membrane, ultrafiltration membrane support, and pretreatment; polypropylene membrane Non-toxic, can be widely used in medicine, chemical industry, food, beverage, and other fields; hydrophobic, especially for gas filtration.

5. Polyethersulfone (PES)

Features: The microporous filter membrane made of ether sulfone is a hydrophilic filter membrane with a high flow rate, low extractables, and good strength. It does not adsorb proteins and extracts, thus polluting the samples.

Application: Low protein adsorption and high drug compatibility, specially designed for biochemical, inspection, pharmaceutical, and sterilization filtration devices.

6. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)

Features: The broadest chemical compatibility, resistant to strong solvents such as DMSO, THF, DMF, dichloromethane, chloroform, etc.

Application: Filtration of all organic solutions, especially strong solvents that cannot be tolerated by other membranes.
